The station was inaugurated on June 14, 1924, the platforms of line 2 were opened to the public with the first section inaugurated. The station is very shallow, its platforms are located under Calle Alcalá, east of the intersection with Calle Príncipe de Vergara, and the lobby with a single access is to the west of the platforms. During Franco's dictatorship, the station adopted the name General Mola, just like the street. In 1984 it recovered its original name. In the 70s, the construction of the station on line 9 began, which included a link with the Velázquez station that was never used. The station was opened to the public long after its construction began due to the crisis period that the network suffered after 1975. The platforms are deeper and under Príncipe de Vergara street. and it was opened to the public on February 24, 1986 within the central section of the line that linked the north and south sections already in operation.
Between August 10 and 25, 2019, the station was closed for modernization works, so the trains passed by without stopping at it.
