The Shiva statue is the largest statue in the Grand Bassin, standing 33 meters high. It is a replica of the one in Lake Sursagar in Vadodara, in Goudjarat.
The Maha Shivaratri Festival is one of the most important Indian festivals in Mauritius and takes place on the crater lake of Ganga Talao. Every year thousands of Indians come on pilgrimage to celebrate the God Shiva, one of the three main divinities of Indus. The pilgrims carry handmade "kanwars" that are shrines dedicated to Shiva, and look for a place on the banks of the Grand Bassin to hold their prayer ceremony and offerings of fruits, lanterns and incense.
This statue receives the pilgrims before the lake.
