As author Nevada Barr states on her website "A Superior Death is set on Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior, Michigan. It is the second in the series and delves into the mysteries both on this wilderness island and in the cold, clear, deep waters of the lake surrounding it."

Isle Royal is a wilderness area, visitors are not allowed to use bicycles or motorized vehicles. Most visitors come for the outstanding hiking, hoping to see one of the islands wolves or moose. Some fisherman also visit and use one of the harbors as a base camp.

Access to Isle Royal during it's open season is limited to boats and float planes. There are ferry transportation services and float planes that can be hired. There are docks for people who fly or boat themselves to the island.
