The Town Theatre opened in 1947 as an 832-seat movie theatre. Around 1974 the Town Theatre closed.

In March of 1998, the Friends of the Old Town Theatre was organized. After almost four years of planning and renovating, the Town Theatre was dedicated on February 22, 2002 as the J. Philip Gibbs Jr. Centre for the Performing Arts.
Art Deco features include the smooth cement horizontal striped accents on each side and the vertical stripes along the top. The entrance is done in glass blocks and the ticket booth is circular. There is also inset decorative metal panels.
