The plaque says, "Dedicated to the Landlubbing Pirate Tiburcio Tapia who came to Cucamonga in 1839 with a fortune earned in the Wild West Days of Los Angeles where he sold a variety of smuggled goods from around the world. He set up a temporary home to watch his cattle, but never permanently settle in this dry and dangerous fringe of the frontier. Without a bank in the area, Tapia is rumored to have buried his gold under a local tree where it remains to this day."
