Paine Field is named in honor of Phill Paine, a local man who pitched between 1951 and 1958 for American Major League Baseball teams. During that time he joined the Army and "in 1953, while serving in the military, Paine pitched in nine games for the Nishitetsu Lions, becoming the first major leaguer to play in Nippon Professional Baseball." (Wikipedia)

This Little League Baseball field is at Glocester Memorial Park in Chepachet, Rhode Island. It is entirely enclosed by a chain link fence including low sections around the dugouts. A set of spectator benches five rows high is installed on a concrete pad along the first base line. My favorite part is the hand-made scoreboard of plywood painted green with stenciled white lettering. A cast bronze plaque mounted to a large boulder behind home plate reads:

This field is dedicated to the memory of
Phillips S. Paine
1930 - 1978
Twelve year veteran pitcher for the
Boston/Milwaukee Braves and
St. Louis Cardinals
Born and raised in Glocester, R.I.
