Union got its name because in frontier days, the site of the town was a rendezvous for troops during the Indian Wars. It was settled by James Alexander in 1774 and originally charted in 1799.

The text of the historic marker reads:

UNION
"Settled in 1774 by James Alexander, who later served in Revolutionary Army. County organized at his house, 1799. "Walnut Grove," built by Andrew Beirne, and "Elmwood," built by the Capertons, fine examples of colonial architecture.
