Tuzigoot is a group of rock walled rooms that date to the period from 1050 to 1400 A.D. At its most populous, the pueblo would have housed 225 people on a promontory above the Verde River flood plain. The site offered a commanding line of site view of neighboring communities and trails. Occupation of the site continued through the 1300's when the population of the area began migrating north. There are several theories as to the cause of the migration but none confirmed. Excavation of the pueblo began in 1933. The existing walls were uncovered and several structures were reassembled. The rooms were originally entered through the ceiling so there are no doors. Today only the lookout tower at the summit remains as it was reconstructed. The rest of the site was returned to the condition prior to 1933. The site is now a national monument. There is a visitor center and museum. The walls are exposed but maintained. Drains have been installed to allow water to exit the rooms and paths and signage have been established for visitors.
