"The cemetery of Nijeberkoop had a church building for a long time, but over the years it fell into disrepair. In 1826 the ruin was finally cleared away. All that remained was the bell tower.

According to an old folk lore, two horse carcasses used to be found in the church. A farmer from the vicinity of Nijeberkoop had not fenced off his pasture properly. As a result, the horses escaped and people did not know where they had gone.

Some time later they were finally found, but unfortunately they were no longer alive. They lay emaciated in the church. Hunger had caused them to gnaw at the pews. One suspects that the door had been left open and the horses had come in through it.
Then the door must have blown shut again.

Whether it is true is doubtful, but the fact is that during the construction of the cemetery in 1948, besides remains of the church, bones of horses were found ..."

At the entrance to the cemetery you will find a large boulder carved in the shape of a horse's head.
