A bronze plaque dedicated to the memory T/5 Charles Edward Gates is affixed to a 3' high boulder set underneath a beech tree. The plaque is inscribed:

DIED ON V-J DAY, AUGUST 14, 1945
MANILA, PHILIPPINE ISLANDS

T/5 Charles Edward Gates, ID: 11082514, joined the U.S. Army from Midddlesex County, MA. He died of non-battle relate causes on the last full day of World War II. Japanese Emperor Hirohito announced the surrender of Japan on August 15, 1945. The surrender was formally signed aboard the battleship USS Missouri on September 2, 1945.
