Heavy fortress artillery
The heavier guns with the largest firing range (500 to 1200 meters) were placed on the front rows (facen) of the bastions in an imminent attack. With these cannons the attackers were fired on from the greatest possible distance in front of the ravelins
Light fortress artillery
The lighter guns were placed on the flanks of the bastions of the fortress in the event of an imminent attack. These guns (six or twelve pounder) and muskets were fired at the attacker when they had approached the long side of the ramparts (the countrines) within storm distance.
