The Ride is another sculpture created by the husband and wife team of Veronica and Edwin Dam de Nogales for the Calgary Stampede. Check out their other piece Courage and Thunder just to the east of this location. This 3.6m tall sculpture was installed in 2008.

Done in the same style as their other sculpture, The Ride shows a rider vying to stay atop a bull while it tries to throw him off. The rider must stay on for eight secs, which is said to be the most dangerous eight secs in sports. If the rider doesn't get bucked off, he receives a score based both on his performance as well as the bull's performance. Bull riding is just one event held during the Calgary Stampede's daily rodeo competitions.

If you enjoyed this sculpture, be sure to check out the rest of the art work on the Stampede Grounds. The Ride sculpture is actually just one stop along the Stampede's Art Walk, a 19 piece self-guided walking tour highlighting many of the interesting sculptures and murals around the grounds. All of them are waymarks as well!
