Athens is located in the Greek periphery of Attica. The city was founded in 508 B.C., construction started on the Parthenon in the mid 400s B.C., and the Erechtheion [a temple dedicated to both Athena and Poseidon] was finished in 406 B.C. Thanks Google.
Athena was chosen as the patron goddess of Athens, thus the name. The Parthenon was built to honor Athena. As stated above, the temples of the Acropolis were finished well before Paul visited Athens.
Acts 17:16-17, "16 While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols. 17 So he reasoned in the synagogue with both Jews and God-fearing Greeks, as well as in the marketplace day by day with those who happened to be there."
More then 2,000 years ago the marketplace would have been the Agora. Today the Plaka is home to many small shops and stalls selling a wide variety of things.
