The Monument to Jan de Rooij is a Dutch war memorial, located on Tilburgseweg, Sprang-Capelle. It is a monument in honor of the “hero of the Langstraat” Jan de Rooij, who meant a lot to the resistance during the Battle of the Bulge in 1944. The monument was created by sculptor Fred Carasso (1899-1969) and was unveiled in 1954.

Jan de Rooij was a worker in a shoe factory who joined the local resistance group André. Here he acted as a line-crosser, he was sent to enemy territory – in this case Heusden – where as a spy he had to keep the allied armies informed of what was going on behind the front. He would keep the Allies informed via a radio station hidden in the town hall of Capelle.

Undercover as a farmhand, De Rooij discovered that the German troops in Heusden had plans to assist the troops in the Ardennes. He relayed this to the already liberated South. The Allies bombed these troops, preventing the South from being reoccupied.

The Germans immediately knew there was a spy in their midst. They quickly found the radio station hidden in the town hall. The farming family with whom De Rooij stayed was blamed. However, De Rooij turned himself in, which spared the family. He was captured and transported to Amsterdam. Here he remained silent, saving the lives of many members of the resistance. He was executed on January 6, 1945.

The monument is made of bronze and is placed on a column. The image depicts a woman handcuffed and falling backwards
