A memorial at the Simi Valley Amtrak/Metrolink station honoring the victims of the 2008 Metrolink crash on September 12, 2008.
It was Metrolink's deadliest accident, taking 25 lives (10 of which were Simi Valley residents) and injuring over 100 more, many of them critically. The accident occurred when Metrolink commuter train #111, en route to Simi Valley, missed a red signal and collided head on with a freight train coming from the opposite direction. The collision occurred near Stoney Point in Chatsworth. An investigation determined that the engineer, who also perished in the crash, was texting at the time he ran the red light, causing the accident.
The memorial consists of 11 basalt columns containing the victims names, individual markers on the ground for each victim designed by their families, and shaded seating provided by plant arbors.
A second plaque at the memorial, honors four Simi Valley residents who perished in a Metrolink train collision in Glendale on January 26, 2005. In that incident, 11 people died and over 170 were injured when a suicidal man parked his SUV on the tracks. The collision caused the train to jackknife and derail and it was then hit by a train traveling in the opposite direction.
