The church was founded in the 11th century. Parts of the Romanesque foundation walls are still preserved in the present building, but over the centuries it has been rebuilt and extended many times. After a fire in the 13th century, a tower was built in the northeast corner, a porch in the west in the 14th century, and a Gothic choir in the east in 1483. In 1528 the church was reformed. In the 1680s there were some more changes. Since the demolition of the old steeple and the construction of a new one on the west side in 1834, the church has remained largely unchanged in appearance. Since 1948 it has been listed as a historical monument.

The location is somewhat unusual for a medieval church. It did not stand on an elevated place, like many others from that time, but alone with the vicarage at the bottom of a valley, so that the churchgoers had to descend to the church.

Die Kirche wurde im 11. Jahrhundert gegründet. Teile der romanischen Grundmauern sind im heutigen Gebäude noch erhalten, aber im Laufe der Jahrhunderte wurde sie vielfach umgebaut und erweitert. Nach einem Brand im 13. Jahrhundert wurde in der Nordostecke ein Turm gebaut, im 14. Jahrhundert eine Vorhalle im Westen und 1483 ein gotischer Chor im Osten. 1528 wurde die Kirche reformiert. In den 1680er Jahren gabes einige weitere Veränderungen. Seit dem Abbruch des alten Kirchturm und dem Bau eines neuen an der Westseite im Jahr 1834 blieb die Kirche in Äusseren unverändert. Seit 1948 steht sie unter Denkmalschutz.

Die Lage ist etwas ungewöhnlich für eine mittelalterliche Kirche. Sie stand nicht auf einem erhöhten Ort, wie viele andere aus dieser Zeit, sondern alleine mit der Pfarrhaus am Boden eines Tales, so dass die Kirchgänger zur Kirche hinabsteingen mussten.

Die Kirche St. Michael geht in ihrem Ursprung bis ins 11. Jh. zurück. Sie liegt im Bereich mehrerer wichtiger Verbindungswege über den Bözberg, die teils seit der Antike als Fernstrassen genutzt wurden. Die Grundmauern der ursprünglich romanischen Saalkirche sind im heutigen Kirchenbau teils noch enthalten. Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte erfuhr die Kirche mehrere tiefgreifende Veränderungen. Nach einem Brand im 13. Jh. wurde in der Nordostecke der Kirche ein Turm integriert und zur Abgrenzung des Altars eine Chorbogenwand eingebaut. Einzige Sitzgelegenheit im Laienraum waren damals gemauerte Steinbänke entlang der Nord-, Süd- und Westmauer. Holzbänke im Kirchenschiff waren noch nicht in Gebrauch, so wohnten die meisten Gläubigen der Messe stehend bei. Im 14. Jh. wurde das Kirchenschiff gegen Westen um eine Vorhalle erweitert, die für hochgestellte Persönlichkeiten als letzte Ruhestätte gedient haben dürfte. Durch weitere Umbauten im 15. und 16. Jh. erhielt die Kirche im Wesentlichen ihre heutige Gestalt. 1825 wurde der baufällig gewordene Turm abgetragen und 10 Jahre später durch den heutigen Nachfolger westlich der früheren Vorhalle ersetzt.

Zum Kirchbezirk gehören ebenfalls der breitstämmige Giebelbau des Pfarrhauseg von 1664/65, welcher mit seinen tief gekehlten Reihen- und Zwillingsfenstern und seinem leicht geknickten Satteldach noch zu den seltenen Zeugen spätgotischer Pfarrhäuser gehört, sowie die Pfarrscheune von 1773, die den Pfarrhof nach Nordwesten abschliesst. Zusammen mit der Kirche bilden sie ein bemerkenswertes Ensemble und können als einer der schönsten Pfarrhöfe des reformierten Aargaus gelten. Die Kirche und das Pfarrhaus stehen seit 1948 unter kantonalem Denkmalschutz.

The church of St. Michael dates back to the 11th century. The church district also includes the broad gabled building of the vicarage from 1664/65, which with its deeply grooved row and twin windows and its slightly bent gable roof still belongs to the rare witnesses of late Gothic vicarages, as well as the vicarage barn from 1773, which closes off the vicarage to the northwest. Together with the church, they form a remarkable ensemble and can be considered one of the most beautiful parsonages of the Reformed Aargau. The church and the vicarage have been under cantonal monument protection since 1948.
