The canal opened in 1770 and is 11 miles in length from the town of Driffield to the River Hull. It continued in use until 1951 when competition from road traffic took away all the loads on the canal.

Since 1968 the Driffield Navigation Amenities Association has been working to restore the canal for leisure use. Much of it has been restored but some former swing bridges have been replaced by fixed bridges like the one at this lock and so until the bridges are replaced it will not be possible to reach Driffield.

This information board has details about wildlife along the canal. It includes fish in the water, plants both in the canal and on the canal bank, and birds and insects that can be seen in the air.
