Ancient stone roundel set in the nave wall of St Michael's church, Kniveton.
Discovered in the church in 1842 when it was re-pewed. There is no record of where it was originally placed, but it undoubtedly ancient. It was reset into the south wall of the nave for safekeeping, and is easily overlooked.
It is crudely carved and ‘primitive’ in style. It may be Norman in origin, making it as old as the church itself. Possibly a carved consecration cross.
Christ is depicted on the Cross, smiling. His arms are outstretched on the cross, but the style of carving gives the impression that they are embracing the world in simple joy and acceptance, with neither judgement nor discrimination.
