'Alsager RBL to hold commemoration days for WW1 servicemen'
"Over the next three years each serviceman named on the Alsager War Memorial will be celebrated
The Alsager branch of the Royal British Legion is holding commemoration ceremonies for servicemen who died during the First World War.
Over the next three years each serviceman named on the Alsager War Memorial will be celebrated in a short ceremony marking the 100th anniversary of ‘The Great War’.
The first will be for 2nd Lt. Raymond George Frederick Goss who died in action on August 13, 1915, near to Ypres in Belgium.
Raymond Goss joined the North Staffordshire Regiment, 2nd Territorial Battalion in 1914 and was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant on February 17, 1915.
He and his brother Richard were fighting on Hill 60, near Ypres on the day of Raymond’s death.
They were entrenched together in a railway dugout when a German shell fell and exploded killing Raymond instantly.
A short exhortation will be given, followed by bugle calls The Silence, The Last Post and Reveille.
Wreaths will be laid by the chairman of Alsager Town Council, Cllr Simon Bishop, the B’HOYS of Alsager and the Royal British Legion.
The commemoration will take place at 11am on Thursday August 13, at the War Memorial on Sandbach Road South.
Participants are asked to arrive at the War Memorial no later than 10.50am. Relatives of the listed Alsager servicemen are invited to attend the future ceremonies.
