The town of Dover was first settled in the late 1800's. Situated on the Chisholm Trail, it was a mecca for cattle ranches. The railroad came through in 1889. The Red Fork Trader's ranch was established and the Land Run of 1889 brought settlers. Ranching and oil kept the town going. In the early 1940's it had 500 residents. The town received severe damage in 1973 with extensive flooding, and in 1999 from the May 3rd, F5 tornado. Today, the population is 365, half of whom commute to jobs in Hennessey and Kingfisher.
The Dover Town Hall is a one-story metal building located on the north side of town. The offices are open Monday-Friday from 9-12 and 1-4. Town hall shares this building with the Dover Community Center. The town is governed by a Mayor and town Board, who meet the second Monday of each month at this location.
