Gordon Battelle

Methodist minister and educator Gordon Battelle was a delegate to state's first Constitutional Convention in 1861. Battelle was instrumental in the inclusion of free public education, but his efforts at gradual emancipation of slaves failed. In November of 1861, he became chaplain of the First (West) Virginia Infantry. He died of typhoid fever in 1862.
