"Boone County Fire Protection District Station 9 is located on West Henderson Road just off of Highway 40 in Midway. Station 9 has been serving the Midway area from its current location since it was placed in service as the Fire Districts 8th station in 1978. While waiting for land acquisition and construction of the pole supported pre-engineered building or “Pole Barn” the Midway area’s first piece of fire apparatus was a 1942 pumper passed down from Station 2. The engine was actually kept on the street in front of a volunteer’s home in the Midway area. John Wilke, a long-time member who joined the Central Missouri Radio Squad in 1966 stored the 1942 pumper until construction of the new two-bay pole barn was completed. John Wilke has 55 years of dedicated volunteer service and is still assigned to Station 9.
"Station 9 was established as the growing population of the Midway area continued and the need for fire protection recourses between Columbia and the already established Station 2 increased. A 12-inch-thick concrete floor was poured in the pole barn to support the weight of the Fire District’s 5,000 gallon “Super Tanker” which was the stations 2nd piece of fire apparatus. The super tanker was a retired military fueling semi and was used to transport large amounts of water to fires in Boone County. When the 1980 bond issue passed the district started purchasing smaller 1,500-gallon tankers.
"In 1981, when the 5,000-gallon super tanker was retired from service, there was enough room for living quarters so two resident rooms were built in the back of the station. Station 9 would serve from that facility until the new 4-bay station opened in 2000.
"Station 9 protects several miles of Interstate 70 between the Columbia city limits and the Cooper/Boone County line. Station 9 has responded to many memorable emergencies. The most notable was the great flood of 1993. Historically Station 9’s highest call volume is a result of vehicle accidents along Interstate 70.
"Station 9 has a meeting room, day room, office and kitchen along with 8 resident rooms and was the fire districts 3rd busiest station in 2020. The station currently houses Engine 901, a 2000 fire engine, Tanker 905, a 2000 model tanker, Squad 904 a 2012 rescue squad, and Truck 906, a 2016 Ford F450 used to respond to medical emergencies and grass fires.
