Veere's town hall carillon is one of the top instruments in this genre. Andreas van den Gheyn from Leuven completed the carillon in the town hall tower of Veere in 1790, cast by his uncle Peter de Cellebroeder. It would be the crown on his work, because Andreas died in 1793. The Van den Gheyn family was no stranger to Veere. Peter II v.d. As early as 1594, Gheyn supplied a carillon for the Town Hall Tower – the large “hourly chime” remains of this – and his descendant Peter de Cellebroeder v.d. Gheyn replaced this set in 1735 with a new carillon – with drum and keyboard – of 47 bells.

This game was not entirely satisfactory in the long run and Peter's nephew Andreas was commissioned in 1790 to recast nine defective bells and to tune the others. Fifty years later, the city was so impoverished that the keyboard was removed, handplaying by a carillonneur was no longer possible.

After years of neglect and well-intentioned but badly turned out restorations, the game was restored in 1948 under the direction of Ferdinand Timmermans. The hour chime was removed and 10 bells were replaced by bells from Petit and Fritsen. Most importantly, the sticks keyboard for the hand game returned.

In 1972 the carillon was fundamentally restored and expanded by a fourth octave. The hourly chime and three Van den Gheyn clocks returned to the tower from the museum.

Since 1972, the game has been revised several times. For example, in 1999 Eijsbouts installed a modern keyboard in accordance with current standards. Due to the poor structural condition of the tower, the carillon had to be completely dismantled in 2013.

The carillonneur plays all the bells by means of the stick keyboard. The bells are sounded with the clappers in the bell. Dynamic play is possible here. The current carillon has 47 bells plus the old clockwork bell.
