"1977 wurde auf Einladung der Regierung Kreisky – als erste in einem westeuropäisches Land – eine offizielle Vertretung der PLO in Wien eröffnet (heute Vertretung von Palästina in Österreich). 1980 erkannte Österreich unter Kreisky – als erstes Land weltweit – die PLO als legitime politische Vertretung der Palästinenser an, zur Förderung des Nahost-Friedensprozesses durch Dialog im Geist der Neutralität Österreichs. Das wurde seinerzeit international auch scharf kritisiert, war aber letztendlich ein bedeutender Schritt in Richtung der Anerkennung als Völkerrechtssubjekt und den Oslo-Friedensprozess. Österreich hielt die Beziehungen auch bei Gründung der Palästinensischen Autonomiebehörde (Palestinian Authority PA oder Palästinensische Nationalbehörde PNA) bei, die die PLO 1994 als anerkannte Vertretung ersetzte."

"In 1977, at the invitation of the Kreisky government, an official representation of the PLO was opened in Vienna - the first in a Western European country (today the Representation of Palestine in Austria). In 1980, under Kreisky, Austria became the first country in the world to recognize the PLO as the legitimate political representative of the Palestinians, in order to promote the Middle East peace process through dialogue in the spirit of Austria's neutrality. This was also sharply criticized internationally at the time, but was ultimately a significant step toward recognition as a subject of international law and the Oslo peace process. Austria also maintained relations when the Palestinian Authority (PA or Palestinian National Authority PNA) was founded, replacing the PLO as the recognized representative body in 1994."
