As was traditional with monumental civic buildings, wide stairs lead to the entrance of the Neo-Classical Calcasieu Parish Courthouse, designed by Favrot and Livaudais in 1912. The entrance is under a colossal Roman-Doric portico, emblazoned with the Louisiana state seal. The courthouse is capped with a copper drum and dome, dominating the downtown area. Inside, an imperial staircase with marble treads leads upstairs to the main courtroom, set under a Roman lantern. The rotunda is ornamented with four free-standing Tuscan columns.
Lake Charles became the county seat of Calcasieu Parish in 1852. This courthouse was built the same year Davis, Allen and Beauregard Parishes were carved from Calcasieu. On the courthouse lawn, shaded by huge live oaks, are several war memorials, including a confederate memorial.
