The Greenwood Cultural Center is welcoming people back inside after more than a year of being closed because of COVID-19.

People coming in for the centennial and from around Tulsa were stopping in to learn about the Tulsa Race Massacre.

Actor Kendrick Sampson and Oklahoma Representative Regina Goodwin being two of many notable names stopping by over the weekend.

Dr. Shelia Bouie from Memphis was visiting the center Saturday and said she's learning something new.

"I knew about the Tulsa Massacre, the race riot, it was something that was taught and probably engrained," Bouie said, "But the more you learn about it, the more notorious you find that it was."

How and when people visiting the center learned about the massacre varies.

Barbara Benson is now a Tulsa resident after moving from Florida.

It wasn't until the move that she learned about the massacre she said.

"I found out about the massacre and for the last six years I have volunteered and helped at Eisenhower School concerning the massacre and Black history," Benson said.

As Benson passes on her knowledge to the next generation, the Greenwood Cultural Center passes it on to all who stop by.

Now, they can do that safely after reopening on May 17 after more than a year of being closed because of COVID-19.

"This was just like history that was lost and now it's being found and that just really makes me happy," Benson said.

"It is emotional, it's overwhelming and it really stirs a desire in you to do more," Bouie said.
