L'abbaye des Saints-Pierre-et-Paul de Termonde est une abbaye toujours vivante située à Termonde, en Belgique, dans la province de Flandre-Orientale. Elle fut fondée en 1837 par Dom Veremundus D'Haens, moine bénédictin natif du lieu.

Histoire

À sa fondation en 1837, l'abbaye s'est d'abord installée dans l'ancien couvent des Capucins de Termonde. À partir de 1886, des constructions nouvelles ont vu le jour, gravement endommagées en 1914, à l'exception de la riche bibliothèque néo-gothique.

Patrimoine culturel

Après l'armistice de 1918, l'abbaye est relevée immédiatement. Son style illustre le style typique de la Renaissance flamande tout en se référant parfois au gothique. L'ensemble de l'abbaye est centré sur une cour intérieure et veillé par une église décorée de fresques de l'Alostois Fritz Kiekens et d'un beau mobilier dont le maître-autel avec retable en albâtre et d'un chemin de croix d'Aloïs de Beule. L'abbaye possède une série de primitifs italiens, une toile de Giovanni David et d'autres de l'école flamande : Marcel Gillis, Samuel de Vriendt, Albert Servaes, ...

L'abbaye conserve un album daté 1658, remarquablement dessiné par Augustin Van Opstal, qui fut prieur, à la tête du prieuré des Frasnes, plus connu aujourd'hui sous le nom de chapelle Notre-Dame du Roux.

La bibliothèque conservait le fameux Codex Villarensis d'Hildegarde de Bingen mais en août 2017, l'abbaye a confié le manuscrit à la bibliothèque de la Faculté de théologie de l' Université catholique de Louvain pour sa conservation.

The Abbey of Saints Peter and Paul of Dendermonde is a still living abbey located in Dendermonde, Belgium, in the province of East Flanders. It was founded in 1837 by Dom Veremundus D'Haens, a native Benedictine monk.

History

When the abbey was founded in 1837, it was initially housed in the former Capuchin convent in Dendermonde. From 1886 onwards, new buildings were erected, which were severely damaged in 1914, with the exception of the rich neo-Gothic library.

Cultural heritage

After the armistice of 1918, the abbey was raised immediately. Its style illustrates the typical Flemish Renaissance style, while sometimes referring to the Gothic. The abbey complex is centred on an inner courtyard and is watched over by a church decorated with frescoes by Fritz Kiekens from Aalst and beautiful furnishings, including the high altar with an alabaster altarpiece and a Stations of the Cross by Aloïs de Beule. The abbey has a series of Italian primitives, a painting by Giovanni David and others from the Flemish school: Marcel Gillis, Samuel de Vriendt, Albert Servaes, ...

The abbey preserves an album dated 1658, remarkably drawn by Augustin Van Opstal, who was prior, at the head of the Frasnes priory, better known today as the Notre-Dame du Roux chapel.

The library kept the famous Codex Villarensis of Hildegard of Bingen, but in August 2017, the abbey entrusted the manuscript to the library of the Faculty of Theology of the Catholic University of Leuven for conservation.

De abdij van de Heiligen Petrus en Paulus van Dendermonde is een nog levende abdij gelegen in Dendermonde, België, in de provincie Oost-Vlaanderen. Het werd in 1837 gesticht door Dom Veremundus D'Haens, een inlandse Benedictijner monnik.

Geschiedenis

Bij de stichting van de abdij in 1837 werd ze aanvankelijk ondergebracht in het voormalige kapucijnenklooster in Dendermonde. Vanaf 1886 werden nieuwe gebouwen opgetrokken, die in 1914 zwaar beschadigd raakten, met uitzondering van de rijke neogotische bibliotheek.

Cultureel erfgoed

Na de wapenstilstand van 1918 werd de abdij onmiddellijk opgeheven. De stijl illustreert de typische Vlaamse renaissancestijl, maar verwijst soms ook naar de gotiek. Het abdijcomplex is gecentreerd rond een binnenplein en wordt bewaakt door een kerk die versierd is met fresco's van Fritz Kiekens uit Aalst en prachtig meubilair, waaronder het hoofdaltaar met een albasten altaarstuk en een kruiswegstatie van Aloïs de Beule. De abdij bezit een reeks Italiaanse primitieven, een schilderij van Giovanni David en andere uit de Vlaamse school: Marcel Gillis, Samuel de Vriendt, Albert Servaes, ...

De abdij bewaart een album uit 1658, opmerkelijk getekend door Augustin Van Opstal, die prior was, aan het hoofd van de priorij van Frasnes, vandaag beter bekend als de kapel Notre-Dame du Roux.

De bibliotheek bewaarde de beroemde Codex Villarensis van Hildegard van Bingen, maar in augustus 2017 vertrouwde de abdij het manuscript toe aan de bibliotheek van de Faculteit Theologie van de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven om het te laten conserveren.
