Legends Diner opened in 2019, and is operated by a retired couple who met in the Air Force, and who are absolutely crazy about old diners. He handles the front, while she's the cook, and word is that her patty melt is the best in town. The diner has an old 1950s decor, full of Marilyn Monroe, James Dean and other period memorabilia, with a jukebox that plays the hits, heavy on Elvis and Little Richard. There are a couple of screens on the wall that flash 1950s-themed trivia questions as you wait, and occasionally, they'll show some kind of blast from the past. Along the back wall is an unused table dedicated to veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces. There are about a dozen tables and booths here, and the service is outstanding.
Breakfast is served all day, and it's primarily egg dishes (including omelets), biscuits and gravy, French toast, pancakes, and Red-eye gravy and grits. The Legends Breakfast is your best option if you're planning for a busy day (see photo in gallery). Likewise, lunch is available all day. It's primarily sandwiches like burgers and hot dogs, but they also have chili, Frito Pie, chicken strips, and salads. Check the current menu or the board for one of their blue plate specials if you're after an entrée of some kind, and if you have little ones with you, there's a small kids menu for ages ten and under. All drinks are non-alcoholic, including coffee, tea, soft drinks, orange juice, and milk.
They'll fill you up quite well, but for best results, save some room for their homemade pies. They've got nearly a dozen varieties, and some go quicker than others, especially since they sell entire pies to-go. As one would expect in a 50s diner, they also do shakes, malts, floats, sodas, egg creams (a favorite), sundaes, banana splits, and ice cream by the scoop.
In more recent days, Legends Diner made the local news with a sign on their door, advising a $50 surcharge if the owners have to explain why wearing a mask inside is necessary during the COVID-19 pandemic, going up to $75 if they have to hear why a non-compliant customer disagrees. While meant tongue-in-cheek, they have had a few occasions where they've been close to assessing that charge. Behave!
They also offer free, secure wi-fi, with the password available upon request. Signal strength is quite good, and you can save a little bandwidth if you're waiting for them to bring out your order.
