This part of what is present-day North America was once at the floor of a shallow sea, where crinoids were abundant. The limestone from which this building and display walls are constructed is composed almost entirely of crinoid fragments. The most common crinoid fossils are the individual button-like plates that are fragments of the stem of the crinoids, and you will find these throughout the yellow limestone here. Look carefully and you will find other fossils as well. There is ample parking just a few feet from the display walls.
