"The monument, titled "Als't Moet", was created on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the National Reserve Corps. It symbolically shows the willingness of citizens (a bronze man with a spade in the ground and his rifle on his back, mounted on a granite pedestal) to help the government in the event of a threat.

A digital monument to the fallen of the Landstorm has also been developed: (visit link)

The Volunteer Landstorm was formed in 1914, at the outbreak of World War I. The military unit was formed to manage the large stream of volunteers, who wanted to help protect the Netherlands at the outbreak of World War I, and to give them a place within the armed forces.

National Reserve
After World War I, the units continued to exist. In 1939, on the eve of World War II, the Voluntary Landstorm consisted of 90,000 volunteers, over half of whom were mobilized. Many actually took part in the battle in the May Days of 1940. The credo of the volunteers was:

Next to civilian, also soldier!

The German occupying forces abolished the Vrijwillige Landstorm (Volunteer Army Firearms Squad) at the beginning of the occupation. Three years after the war, in 1948, a new volunteer corps was founded: the National Reserve. This corps currently has 3000 reservists.

The monument to the fallen reservists was made by Roel van der Burg. It is a replica of a statue made in 1923 by August Falise, which was lost in 1945 during the allied bombardment of the Bezuidenhout area of The Hague."
