First State Capitol

Built in 1859 for Linsly Institute, this building served as the first capitol of West Virginia from 1863 to 1870. The inauguration of the state's first governor, Arthur I. Boreman, was held here on June 20, 1861. West Virginia ratification of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, abolishing slavery, and the 14th and 15th amendments, occurred within these walls.
