"I’ve never been certain whether the moral of the Icarus story should only be, as is generally accepted, ‘don’t try to fly too high,’ or whether it might also be thought of as ‘forget the wax and feathers, and do a better job on the wings."
Stanley Kubrick
The colossal statue of Icarus, in white Carrara marble, was created in 1941 to commemorate Bruno Mussolini (who died due to an aircraft failure during a flight) by the Abruzzo sculptor Francesco Saverio Palozzi, outside the then Air Force college of the Italian Youth of the “Bruno Mussolini” lictor, located in the Piazzale della Vittoria. Icarus characterizes the face of the city and symbolizes its soul.
This magnificent sculpture was degraded for a long time due to atmospheric pollution and more, until its restoration which was completed in November 2013.
The statue of Icarus has a sturdy, vigorous and perfect body: placed on its feet with tense tendons to soak up the earth, with two wings embraced like two vast clipei, with his face ardently turned to devour the sky. This virile sculpture, static and heavy, perfectly illustrates the Fascist myth of Roman times, in particular it seems to refer to the archaic and classical program followed by the artists of the Emperor Octavian Augustus to infuse an austere solemnity to the images which, following precise political indications, had to celebrate the new order.
The main elements of late-archaism, such as the rigid frontality capable of infusing the figure with a hieratic tone and a sacred meaning, blend with the ageless idealization and perfection of Athenian classicism. The myth of Icarus, reproduced here, does not reveal the failure of the enterprise, but rather praises with refinement the courage and audacity of man, ready to give his life, sure of attaining the immortality reserved for heroes, fearlessly gazing at the heaven waiting for a certain triumph. A myth that would exalt Gabriele d'Annunzio, a work born from the union of elements of the archaic age with expert studies on the spirit and nobility of human nature carried out by the greatest masters of the classical period.
