"Onze veerpont tussen Gorinchem en Sleeuwijk heeft het oudst bekende veerrecht van Nederland. De eerste vermelding komt uit 1329. In het verleden was de pont dan ook de hoofdverbinding van noord naar zuid en andersom. Hugo de groot zette zijn ontsnapping via deze weg voort en Marie Louise, de vrouw van Napoleon Bonaparte, ging met het veer om haar man in Gorinchem te bezoeken. Vandaag de dag vaart ons voet- en fietsveer volgens een vaste dienstregeling tussen Sleeuwijk en Gorinchem. Het veer wordt op werkdagen veelvuldig gebruikt door werkenden en scholieren, die de comfortabele en veilige veerpont verkiezen boven de Merwedebrug. De pont is ook erg handig als je gaat winkelen, een terrasje gaat pakken of uiteten gaat aan de overkant. Overvaren is de perfecte manier om de parkeerdrukte in de Gorcumse binnenstad te ontwijken. Vanaf de veersteiger Buiten de Waterpoort loop je zo het centrum in. "

"Our ferry between Gorinchem and Sleeuwijk has the oldest known ferry right in the Netherlands. The first mention comes from 1329. In the past, the ferry was the main connection from north to south and vice versa. Hugo de Groot continued his escape via this road and Marie Louise, Napoleon Bonaparte's wife, took the ferry to visit her husband in Gorinchem.Today, our pedestrian and bicycle ferry runs on a regular schedule between Sleeuwijk and Gorinchem. The ferry is frequently used on weekdays by workers and students , who prefer the comfortable and safe ferry to the Merwedebrug. The ferry is also very handy if you go shopping, go to a terrace or eat out across the street. Crossing over is the perfect way to avoid the parking crowds in the center of Gorcum. the ferry landing Outside the Waterpoort you can walk straight into the center."
