Troepen van het Derde Saksische Leger voerden vanaf 15 augustus 1914 een verwoed gevecht met Fransen die zich in de citadel op de rechteroever van de Maas hadden verschanst. Daarbij is het bepaald niet zachtzinnig toegegaan. Op 23 augustus trokken de Fransen zich terug op de linkeroever van de Maas en viel Dinant in Duitse handen. De Duitsers wilden wraak nemen voor de geleden verliezen en in de mening dat zich onder de burgerbevolking scherpschutters bevonden, richtten ze een vreselijk bloedbad aan.

In totaal werden er 674 mensen doodgeschoten waarvan 92 vrouwen, 38 kinderen en ook oude mannen van boven de 75 jaar. Het oudste slachtoffer was een weduwe van 88 jaar en het jongste een kind van drie weken. En alsof dat allemaal nog niet genoeg was, werd aan het einde van de dag overal brand gesticht en 1100 gebouwen veranderden in as. De stad was compleet verwoest. Na de oorlog zal geen enkele verantwoordelijke voor de gruwelheden worden veroordeeld. Het doodschieten van burgers en platbranden van een stad vond in meerdere Belgische steden plaats, maar in Dinant was het aantal slachtoffers het talrijkst."
