In 1993, sculpturist Hans Hermes made this sculpture in bronze for the gardens of Landgoed de Mattemburgh.

Landgoed de Mattemburgh was built in 1881 for Petrus Cuijpers and his wife Maria van Mattemburgh. Over time, it was expanded with beautiful English and French style gardens and much more. Until 1981 it was owned by the count of Mattemburgh, after which it was transferred to Het Brabants Landschap.

Togetherness was our life represents a pair of black swans, exotic animals that were in demand by estate owners. Swans are also loved for their symbolic value. These birds would be monogamous for life. If one bird dies, the other one stays alone for the rest of her of his life.
