Luleå Airport began as a military airfield in 1941 and from 1944, civil air traffic was allowed from Luleå. The airport is located in Kallax 6 km south of Luleå. In 2000, the runway was extended to the current 3350 meters, making it Sweden's longest.
Swedavia owns and operates the airport, which in 2009 had 1 million passengers. There are currently routes to Spain, England and Sweden.
