A memorial stone raised on the battlefield for the largest battle during the Nordic Seven Years' War that took place here on Axtorna was named one autumn day 1565 in the then Danish Halland. The Battle of the Axes was one of the largest in Nordic history. 20,000 men fought, 3,000 fell. The surroundings around the battlefield have not changed much since 1565.
In the autumn of 1565, the Danish army was on its way back south to its winter quarters after the usual looting, massacres and destruction on Swedish territory. The Swedes used the same methods so there is no reason to sympathize with anyone in particular.
The autumn was rainy and the watercourses were difficult to cross. At Högvadsån they were stopped by Swedish troops under the command of Jakob Hästesko. The Swedish army consisted of 12,000 men and the Danish of 8,000. Since the Danes were numerically inferior, they took a defensive position.
At dawn on October 20, 1565, the forces met. Bloody battles were fought all day. It seems that artillery was used extensively. The Danish mercenaries had a lot of cavalry, which seems to have been crucial in forcing the Swedes to withdraw. The Danes stayed on the battlefield for a whole week to take advantage of the weapons and equipment that could be reused.
