Ancient stone coffin, discovered when the church was built. It may be the coffin of the abbey founder, William Lord Brewere, who was buried here in 1226 (visit link) . It is made of red stone, with moulded covers of Purbeck marble.

A stone plaque near the cofin tells us -
This coffin and a similar one, were
found when the foundations of this
church were laid.
They were believed to contain
the remains of the founder of the
Cistercian abbey of Dunkeswell,
Lord William de Brewer and his wife
who were buried A.D. 1226.
The bones of both were reverently
re-interred in the 2nd coffin in 1842,
by Mrs Simcoe,
wife of Lieut. General Simcoe;
who was a direct descendant of
Lord William de Brewer.
This coffin was moved into the church
and the inscription placed by
Mrs Simcoe of Wolford. 1914
Approximate Age of Artefact: 1226
