The TT Circuit Assen (also known as Circuit van Drenthe and The Cathedral of Speed) is a circuit located in Assen, the Netherlands, which is used for the MotoGP TT Assen, World Superbike Championship, British Superbike Championship and the DTM. Between 1925 and 1954 the races were held on a street circuit. There has been a permanent circuit since 1955.
The first race was organized by 'Motorclub Assen en Omstreken' on 11 July 1925 over a course with a length of 28.4 kilometers. Not on a smooth smooth circuit, but on cobblestone roads between Drenthe villages. During this first race, a stretch of unpaved road was even included in the route.
In 1955 the renovated track with a length of 7,705 meters was put into use. This resulted in an unprecedented high registration of participants.
In 2005 and 2006, the circuit, which has now been shortened to 6027 meters, was thoroughly renovated.
Due to the high investment costs, the TT circuit can no longer survive on motorcycle races alone. That is why there are also other activities on site. For example, the Truckstar Festival has been an annual event in the last weekend of July since 1980.
Today, in addition to motorcycle and car races, concerts are also held. In 2009 the prologue of the Vuelta a España (Cycling) took place on the circuit.
In 2010, the TT Run was added, a running event for professionals, amateurs and companies.
Between September 28 and October 7, 2011, the Defense organization held the large-scale exercise Falcon Autumn. In this, the circuit played a central role as a fictional airport, which had to be captured and served as a base for actions in the area.
In 2015, a competition of the World Motocross Championship was held for the first time.
