Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone was born in 1181 or 1182 in Italy.

He became a Catholic Friar and founded the men's Order of Friars Minor, the women's Order of St. Clare, the Third Order of St. Francis and the Custody of the Holy Land.

He was canonized on July 16, 1228 by Pope Gregory IX.

His feast day is October 4. (although he died on October 3)

He was known for his love of God's creation, so is often portrayed with animals.
