"Legend has it that Walter was an English aviator (others say Irish or Russian) The story of Walter, the aviator, is related to an event that occurred around the same time (the Civil War), also in Miranda. Avilesina legend tells that in the years of the Civil War a ghost settled in the house of Victorino Fernández Balsera. The descendants of the Avilesino industrialist - who resided in the palace - declared on countless occasions that they had had experiences with the ghostly entity, a mocking spirit.
He would shoot pictures, open the door handles and, for music lovers, sometimes he would play the piano.
The Balsera-Sendón family always spoke of an English or Irish aviator who would have fallen in the Miranda mountains during the last civil conflict. This aviator, if you pay attention to the legend, wandered through Avilés until he settled in the Fernández Balsera palace, a stately building built around 1915 (the window, from the Claus y cia company, is dated 1917) on the way up to the neighborhood of the Carbayedo. The house - the current Conservatory - had monumental gardens that reached Cabruñana Street. In the middle of those gardens there was even a swimming pool.
It ended up crashing in a forest near the current Forcón racecourse, in the council of Castrillón. According to testimonies collected at the La Raza site, the aviator had time to parachute. According to a popular account, the aviator was neither English nor Irish. He was Russian. He had left the Carreño aerodrome.
The story of the ghost of the Balsera palace was collected by José María Martínez, director of the Conservatory. In the television program, he remembers that he, Ana del Puente and the former Councilor for Culture, José Martínez, recorded psychophonies in the center. The ghost's custom was to manifest around two twenty in the morning. At that time, precisely, they made the recording.
In the story, Martínez recalls that Ana del Puente had a calculator that had memorized a series of melodies. She said that calculator didn't work. "When I left the room, the calculator started to work," said Martínez. Elena Sendón, Balsera's granddaughter, listened to the result of the recording and identified the ghost Walter."
