In a professional boxing career that spanned 25 years, Sugar Ray Robinson recorded 175 wins (110 by knockout) against just 19 losses. He won his first 40 bouts and held the world welterweight title for five years. In 1958, he crossed weight classes and became the middleweight champion by defeating the ‘Raging Bull,’ Jake LaMotta. In a book put out by ‘The Ring’ magazine, Sugar Ray Robinson topped the list of ‘The 100 Greatest Boxers of All Time.’

Robinson’s real name was Walker Smith Jr. How do you get from Walker Smith Jr. to Sugar Ray Robinson? In order to participate in his first fight as an amateur, under-aged Smith had to borrow the Amateur Athletic Union card from a fellow boxer. That man’s name was Ray Robinson. George Gainford, owner of a local boxing club, gave him the nickname ‘Sugar.’ Later in his career, Robinson would recollect: "Sugar Ray Robinson had a nice ring to it - Sugar Walker Smith wouldn't have been the same."

Sugar Ray Robinson died on April 12, 1989, from complications due to Alzheimer's disease and diabetes. He is interred at Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood, California.
