This peace pole is on directly on the perimeter route close to the church and the house of the family Ter Horst.
Both places where important during world war II in 1944.
At the Ter Horst house many wounded soldiers where treated.
Kate Ter Horst was a model of strength and endurance. She helped the doctors, comforted those who were dying, gave courage to the wounded, and in the evenings read psalms from an English Bible for all the soldiers.
She played a role in the film Theirs is the glory, which was made in the summer of 1945 about the Battle of Arnhem. Her fame grew further thanks to the film A Bridge Too Far in which she was played by the Swedish Liv Ullmann.
During Operation Market Garden in 1944, the British failed to capture the bridge over the Lower Rhine, which would later be called John Frost Bridge, in Arnhem. After heavy losses, they withdrew to Oosterbeek on 19 September, the third day of the operation. About 3,000 soldiers gathered at the old church. Heavy fighting took place in the vicinity of the church for eight days. In the old rectory next door, Kate ter Horst, among others, cared for approximately 250 wounded British soldiers. The almshouse served as one of the rallying points for the Allies before they retreated across the Rhine which is close by. The church was partly destroyed during the war.
