The rural parish of Careston (pronounced car-is-ton) is situated in the fertile plain of Strathmore around four miles west of the Angus town of Brechin. Sir Alexander Carnegy of Balnamoon suggested a church to be built in the area due to parishioners having to travel to the parish church in Brechin. The T-plan building was started in 1636 and completed in 1641. Since then it has been remodelled in 1808 and 1905.

The churchyard lies predominately to the south, surrounded by farmland, with the older gravestones nearest the church, and newer ones to the south. Many older stones were removed in the 19th century due to repair work on the church's steading building, and despite the large size of the churchyard, the gravestones are sparsely laid out.

The featured gravestone is up against the eastern wall close to the church and reads as follows:
