Het Von Gimborn Arboretum is een bomentuin te Doorn (Utrecht). Dit arboretum heeft een oppervlakte van 27 ha, en is in 1925 door Max Th. von Gimborn gesticht. Van 1966 tot 2010 maakte het deel uit van de Botanische Tuinen Universiteit Utrecht. Sinds 1 januari 2010 treedt de Stichting Von Gimborn Arboretum op als beheerder.

Het Von Gimborn Arboretum is het levenswerk van de inktfabrikant Max Th. von Gimborn (1872 - 1964), die uit liefhebberij bomen ging verzamelen. Nadat hij in 1907 in Zevenaar een inktfabriek was begonnen, legde hij daar op een terrein van 5 ha zijn eerste bomenverzameling aan. Dit arboretum bestaat nog steeds: het draagt de naam Gimbornhof. Zijn grote liefde waren de coniferen. Die gedijen over het algemeen op zandgrond beter dan op de klei van Zevenaar. Daarom ging hij op zoek naar een andere plaats om zijn (naald-)bomenverzameling te vestigen. In 1924 kocht hij een terrein van 47 ha aan de Vossensteinsesteeg in Doorn. Hij ging zelf ook in Doorn wonen en gaf de tuinarchitect Gerard Bleeker opdracht om een 'park tevens arboretum' te ontwerpen in Engelse landschapsstijl. Aanvankelijk lag het in de bedoeling ook een woonhuis in het park te bouwen, maar dat is er nooit van gekomen. Uiteindelijk werd ook maar 23 van de 47 ha als arboretum ingericht.

Het arboretum ondervond weinig schade ten gevolge van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Langzamerhand bleek het onderhoud van de gigantische collectie echter de krachten van Von Gimborn te boven te gaan. Toen hij in 1964 overleed, waren grote delen van het arboretum enigszins in verval geraakt.

In 1966 kwam het arboretum in het bezit van de Universiteit Utrecht. Daarmee werd een tijdperk ingeluid van opknappen, verjongen en vernieuwen, dat tot op heden voortduurt. In 1971 werd het arboretum uitgebreid met 4 ha ten behoeve van een eigen kwekerij.

Inmiddels herbergt het arboretum een collectie die uniek is in de wereld. In 1989 ontving het daarvoor een onderscheiding van de International Dendrology Society. In 2000 ontving het ter gelegenheid van het 75-jarig bestaan van de Nederlandse Vereniging van Houtagenten een aantal panelen, die op verschillende plaatsen in de tuin staan en informatie verschaffen over de belangrijkste groepen uit de verzameling. In 2005 is begonnen met de aanleg van een nieuw pad, speciaal ten behoeve van gehandicapten.

The Von Gimborn Arboretum is a tree garden in Doorn (Utrecht). This arboretum has an area of 27 hectares, and was built in 1925 by Max Th. von Gimborn founded. From 1966 to 2010 it was part of the Botanical Gardens Utrecht University. Since January 1, 2010, the Von Gimborn Arboretum Foundation has acted as administrator.

The Von Gimborn Arboretum is the life's work of the ink manufacturer Max Th. von Gimborn (1872 - 1964), who started collecting trees as a hobby. After he had started an ink factory in Zevenaar in 1907, he built his first collection of trees on a site of 5 hectares. This arboretum still exists: it bears the name Gimbornhof. His great love were the conifers. In general, they thrive better on sandy soil than on the clay of Zevenaar. That is why he went looking for another place to establish his (coniferous) tree collection. In 1924 he bought a 47 ha site on the Vossensteinsesteeg in Doorn. He also went to live in Doorn himself and commissioned the landscape gardener Gerard Bleeker to design a 'park also arboretum' in English landscape style. Initially, the intention was to also build a house in the park, but that never happened. In the end, only 23 of the 47 ha was set up as an arboretum.

The arboretum suffered little damage from World War II. Gradually, however, the maintenance of the gigantic collection proved to be beyond Von Gimborn's powers. When he died in 1964, large parts of the arboretum had fallen into disrepair.

In 1966 the arboretum came into the possession of Utrecht University. This ushered in an era of refurbishment, rejuvenation and renewal, which continues to this day. In 1971, the arboretum was expanded by 4 hectares for the purpose of its own nursery.

The arboretum now houses a collection that is unique in the world. In 1989 it received an award from the International Dendrology Society. In 2000, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Dutch Association of Timber Agents, it received a number of panels, which are placed in various places in the garden and provide information about the most important groups in the collection. In 2005 a start was made on the construction of a new path, especially for the disabled.
