This historical marker is located at Hofgaard Park, a small county park near the supposed landing site. James Cook (1728-1779), a British Royal Navy Captain, was on his third voyage into the Pacific Ocean when the expedition saw Oahu and Kauai on January 18, 1778. He anchored at Waimea Bay on January 20, 1778.

Besides the historical marker, the park also includes informational signs and a statue of Cook.
