When it comes to state highpoints, Connecticut is unique in that its highest point is not at the top of anything. Rather it occurs at the highest point where Connecticut’s border with Massachusetts crosses the south side of Mt. Frissell. The actual summit of Mt. Frissell lies several hundred feet northeast of this point and is entirely in the state of Massachusetts.

Getting to the Connecticut highpoint is not terribly difficult but the trails, dirt roads and jeep tracks in the area can be confusing. The website listed below provides a thorough description of the route using the Mt. Frissell Trail from the east where it starts on Mt. Washington Rd. There are other routes you can take. For the record, I hiked along the jeep track from Mt. Washington Rd. to the South Taconic Trail which connects with the Mt. Frissell Trail west of the highpoint.

Besides the highpoint of Connecticut and the summit of Mt. Frissell, there is one other notable geographic point along the Mt. Frissell Trail near this spot: the tripoint where the states of New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts all come together. It’s about one third of a mile west of the highpoint.
