Photos taken on 2 January 2021. The monument consists of a concrete base that is elevated by about 8 feet. On top is the bronze statue of Hidalgo, who is holding what appears to be a pennant in his left hand, signaling the revolution he started.

The plaque says, "Miguel Hidalgo launched the colonial independence struggle against Spain 1810. Hidalgo served as a parish priest who worked on improving loves of the indigenous people in Mexico. He formed and encouraged discussion groups that prompted the idea of an uprising by natives and Mesitzo pleasantry against Spanish landowners. These ideas led to the War for Independence from Spain. On September 16, 1810 'El Grito", a call for Independence from Spain was issued by Hidalgo. Although Hidalgo had no military training, he was named general and supreme commander. On July 30, 1811 Hidalgo was executed from treason. During his execution he placed his right hand over his heart and instructed the execution squad to aim for his hand. It was be another 10 years before Mexico would gain its independence from Spain. However, Miguel Hidalgo led the cause and is considered the Father of Mexico's Independence".
