The market town of Cupar is situated in the north-eastern part of the Kingdom of Fife in Scotland, some ten miles west of St.Andrews. A golf club was formed in 1855 on November 7th and played over a six hole course on farmland at Tailabout. After a disagreement with the farmer who owned the land, the club then played at Springfield Gardens before, in 1892, land was acquired at Hill Tarvit to the south of the town where a nine hole course was laid out.
A clubhouse was opened on Saturday, December 21st at a cost of £600. On August 1935 a proposal was offered to extend the course to 18 holes, however the cost of £10,000 was thought to be too expensive and the idea was shelved. The club has remained at nine holes ever since and is regarded as the oldest in the world, with many nine hole courses in Scotland having been extended to eighteen over the years.
The course lies on the north slope of the Hill of Tarvit and is parkland in nature with a few trees lining the course. The course extends to 5153 yards with the longest hole at 417 yards. The seventh tee is situated at the highest point on the course at its most easterly point. The club lies just off the Ceres Road in the town adjacent to the town's cemetery.
