The Virginia-West Virginia state line falls at a particularly scenic spot, a low ridge overlooking the Shenandoah River valley. The Appalachian Trail, which closely follows the state line, crosses the road here.

Had Virginia not seceded from the United States in May 1861, this would simply a border between two Virginia counties. But after Virginia left the United States, the counties now making up West Virginia decided they did not want to follow. Eventually, in 1863, these counties were admitted to the United States as West Virginia.

There are several other Waymarks attainable here, as well as a lovely stretch of the Appalachian Trail.
